Gardner Edgerton High School freshman Mia Tovkach brought back the school’s first ever individual State 6A golf title. She did so by shooting a 77 at the state tournament at Terradyne Country Club in Wichita last week.
“She did an awesome job,” said Gardner Edgerton High School Golf Coach Amy Van Rheen. “The team is really excited for her.”
It was quite a year for Van Rheen and the Blazer golf squad. The team had nine, top five finishes and qualified the entire team for the State tourney.
In addition, the team set a new school record with a low score of 360 at Swope Park.
Tovkach also set a new 18-hole school record, carding a 71 at Swope Park. She also is the nine-hole school record holder with a 33 at the Paola Country Club.
In addition to the 6A state title, Tovkach took top honors at Paola, Gardner and Falcon Lakes this season. She is also the first Eastern Kansas League champion in GEHS history. She will be recognized on the first-team All-State team.
This year’s team included seniors Hope Bruno and Emily Smith. Juniors included Taylor Hill and Alexis Bailey, sophomores Hannah Trivitt, and Skylar Washington and freshman Tovkach, Shae Stamps, and Haley Meyer.
