Dan Thompson, Republican, has filed to represent the 43rd District in the Kansas House.
Gardner is currently in the 43rd District, but will become part of the new 8th House District if approved by the Legislature.
Rep. Mike Kiegerl, R-Olathe, currently holds the 43rd District seat and has not decided whether to seek re-election to a fifth term.
Thompson has lived in Gardner since 1978.
He retired from Embarq as a project manager in 2007.
Thompson is a past president of the Gardner Area Chamber of Commerce and a past city councilman.
He was active in Gardner Parks and Recreation, starting pee-wee football and helping build T-ball programs in the 1980s and operating batting cages at Westside Park in the 1980s-90s.
Thompson is a member of the Old 56 Highway Car Club.
He will face Bill Sutton, Republican, in the primary election on Aug. 7. The general election is set for Nov. 6.
Thompson, and his wife, Alfie, have two children who graduated from Gardner Edgerton High School.
To date, no other candidates have filed to run to represent the 43rd District. The filing deadline is June 1, 2012.
