Thomas “Tom” Junior Graves, 91, of Gardner, passed away Aug. 6, 2013 at KC Hospice House.

Tom was born Sept. 13, 1921 in Chariton, Iowa to Thayer Baker and Gertrude Eva (Lang) Graves.

He married Olive Jane Rinehart on Oct. 17, 1942 in Corpus Christi, Texas. Tom grew up in Chariton, Iowa. He joined the United States Navy and was a 20-year veteran who was stationed many places. He served during both World War II and the Korean Conflict. In 1959 Tom was stationed at the Olathe Naval Air Station and moved to Gardner.

He was a member of the Gardner American Legion Post #19.

Tom was a meticulous mechanic who loved working with cars and lawnmowers. He enjoyed growing tomatoes and visiting with his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Olive in 2009; sons, Richard “Dick” and Harold “Harry” Graves; siblings, Thane, Lois and Bill Graves.

Tom is survived by his son, Thomas and wife Debbie Graves, of Wichita, Kan.; daughter, Linda and husband Joe Weeks, of Drexel, Mo.; 16 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m., Aug. 13, 2013 at Bruce Funeral Home, Gardner, KS (913)856-7111. Burial follows at Gardner Cemetery with military honors. Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. before the service at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Gardner American Legion Post #19.
