A squirrel is to blame for a 22-minute power outage this morning.

Typically, a squirrel on the power line wouldn’t cause an outage. However, Bruce Baldwin, Gardner Energy interim supervisor, said crews were working on a power line when the squirrel made his fateful dash across an active line. Normally, the line would stay active, but a safety feature shuts power when crews are working on the lines.

The squirrel essentially blew a fuse turning off power to approximately 300 homes and businesses in Gardner for 22-minutes on July 31.

“A squirrel did it,” Baldwin said. “Usually, it wouldn’t have tripped out the whole circuit.”
