Aaron Johnson has been named a Caregiver of the Year by Maxim Healthcare Services
The licensed practical nurse and resident of Johnson County was recognized for providing eight years of experienced, home healthcare service and therapy to a non-verbal, homecare patient.
Johnson first met his patient, Hannah, when she was 15 years old. At the time, she was facing numerous health complications and the odds were against her, but, as Johnson says, -statistics and people are two different things – and he committed himself to making her as strong as possible.
“It’s not behind us completely, it’s never going to be completely behind us but as far as working with her and watching her interact and develop with me, that’s pretty cool,? he says. ”She’s just a person like anyone else. She’s fun and she likes to laugh and she loves music and she likes to be played with and talked to just like you and me. She just doesn’t verbalize, thats about it.”
The one thing that did surprise Johnson was Hannah’s love for a 50-year-old television variety show.

“I was flicking the channels and I know she likes music so I just stopped on The Lawrence Welk Show to see what she would do and she absolutely loved it, “ he said with a laugh.”It helps her get through the therapy and keeps her entertained and keeps her happy, she loves that. Unfortunately, I know every Lawrence Welk episode now – very well. I never thought that that would happen!”
A panel of judges selected Johnson and four other regional winners as top caregivers. Each will attend a special award ceremony hosted by Maxim Healthcare Services in Baltimore, Maryland, on Jan. 27. During the award ceremony, a special tribute video highlighting Johnson’s commitment to caregiving will be premiered.
Now in its fifth year, Maxim?s Caregiver of the Year Award program celebrates healthcare professionals who deliver quality, patient-centered care and service to some of the nation’s most medically fragile and chronically ill patients.
