Riley Pettit of Spring Hill High School was selected as the Lt. Governor of the 2014 Sunflower Girls State. Pettit was selected by the Cole-Smith American Legion Unit 350 to attend the weeklong program at Washburn University. Sunflower Girls State is sponsored annually by the American Legion Auxiliary.
During the week of June 1-6, Pettit joined approximately 325 other Kansas high school seniors to learn the political system of Kansas. Through the Sunflower Girls State program, the students learn by doing.
Beginning at the city level, advancing to the county and the state, the girls registered to vote, filed nomination papers, conducted political campaigns and prepared and presented speeches.
Last year’s Sunflower Girls State Governor, Tracie Thibault of Salina, presided at the 2014 session, assisted by last year’s Lt. Governor, Lena Dennington of Shawnee.
Throughout the week, spearkers on government at the various levels shared their expertise with the girls. Attendees had the opportunity to ask questions and hear speeches from the Honorable Judge G. Joseph Pierron, Kansas State of Appeals; Dr. Barbara Ballard, a state representative, and others.
Pettit is the daughter of Rod and Suazanne Pettit.
