One way to meet the need for easy-to-access classroom security is the installation of quick turn thumb locks on the inside of all classroom doors, Gary Diener, USD 231 director of operations, told board members at their June 10 meeting.
Diener’s board report dealt with identifying ways to improve classroom safety in an emergency situation.
This type of lock would allow a teacher to have immediate control in creating a secure environment for their classroom. The need to have a door key available on a moment’s notice will be eliminated.
It was recommended by staff and approved by the board, to award the contract for purchase and installation of security locks for all classroom doors across the district to DH Pace. This contract is valued at $46,926.
Diener expects to see this project completed in a September/October time frame.
These locks have already been installed at the new Grand Star Elementary.
A phone message left for Diener, asking for a total number of locks to be installed district-wide and a photo opportunity of the lock at the new elementary school, was redirected to Leann Northway, director of community relations.
At press time, no response has been received from Northway.
A follow-up phone call and message to Diener has also gone unanswered.
