Sump pump failure causes minor damage at USD 231 board offices

A damaged sump pump in the USD 231 Board of Education office building wore out during heavy rainfall the first week of September, according to operations director Gary Diener’s September report to the school board.
District staff came into the office on Sept. 1, a Saturday, to vacuum water out of the carpet, and Water and Mold Be Gone, a contractor hired to deal with the light flooding, arrived to assist with clean-up on Sept. 2.
Diener reported to the school board on Sept. 6 that the carpets were treated with mold retardants and deodorizers. The carpets may be replaced or restored depending on word from the district’s insurance adjustor.
Ben Crosier, district chief technology officer, said the sump pump failure caused modest inconvenience for the technology department, but technology services were able to use mobility options to keep things running smoothly.

Report cards for K-2 to be updated this year
Christy Ziegler, the district’s executive director of educational services, is working with a committee to update report cards for Kindergarten, first and second grade levels. According to her report to the school board, the update is required as the district moves to Kansas Common Core Standards for math and English. To date, she wrote that the committee has generated skill areas in parent friendly terms that will be used to monitor and communicate student performance.

Variety of languages spoken at GE schools
Seven different languages, including Russian, Spanish, Lao, Korean, Urdu, Bosnian and Punjabi, are spoken in USD 231 schools, Judy Martin, director of special services, wrote in her report to the school board.
There are 42 English Learning Center students at Gardner Elementary; 18 at Wheatridge Middle School and five at Gardner Edgerton High School for a total of 65 English learning students.
