USD 231 board members received their first written assignment of the new school year from Doug Moeckel, deputy executive director Kansas Association of School Boards, at the work session held prior to the board meeting on July 15.
The assignment:  Write about the one most important role of the school board.
The common thread in all their answers focused on financial accountability, communication, staff, students, quality education and success as a district.  Mary Herbert and Mark Grannell also spoke of representing USD 231 patrons.
These exercises and the discussion that followed were meant to provide board members with the insight into how to blend the new board to be the new team.  Moeckel was invited by the district.
Attorney for the board of education, Joe Hatley, educated board members with a  30-minute program entitled, “Confidentiality and Open Meetings,” during the work session.
