Royals pick GE standout Bubba Starling in MLB draft

The decision just got tougher – or easier – depending on who is asked for local sports standout Bubba Starling.

The Kansas City Royals selected the outfielder in the first round of the Major League
Baseball draft on Monday evening, and now it will be left to Starling to decide whether to sign with the hometown baseball team or keep his verbal commitment to play baseball and football at the University of Nebraska.

The deadline for signing a contract with the Royals, which could come with a Royals’ club record bonus, is Aug. 15, but an earlier deadline looms. Nebraska football players are expected to report to the school in Lincoln no later than July 15.

  1. Jerry L Kellogg Sr says:

Nebraska Athletic Director Tom Osborne announced on June 2 that Darin Erstad has been hired as head baseball coach for the Huskers. Erstad was a two-time MLB All-Star and three-time Gold Glove recipient during his 14-year big league career before retiring in 2009.

Interesting, considering Bubba’s college plans, Erstad was also a two-sport college standout at Nebraska, playing on Coach Osborne’s 1994 national championship football team and was a first team All-American and Big 8 Co-Player if the Year as a senior baseball player in 1995. He was the #1 overall pick in the 1995 MLB draft, beginning his career with the Angels in 1996. He also played for the Astros and White Sox while in the majors.

Here are a couple of great articles on Bubba, his family and his looming decisions:
