Roger Dean Kelly, 83, ofGardner, passed away Oct. 2, 2012 atDelmarGardens,Overland Park,Kan.
Roger was born Dec. 29, 1928 inKansas City,Mo.to James V. and Anna M. (Burbridge) Kelly. He was a graduate ofOlatheHigh School.
Roger served in the Army during the Korean Conflict.
He married Rita Frances Rothwell on June 27, 1953 inGardner.
He was a lineman/troubleman for Kansas City Power and Light and a member of the IBEW Local 1464; retiring in 1990.
Roger was a formerOlatheresident, but had lived inGardnerfor the last 48 years. His passion was crappie fishing atMelvernLakeand he enjoyed hunting and gardening. Roger was an avid KU basketball fan and enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s sporting events. He will be missed by family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Rita in 2000; son, Joseph G. Kelly; siblings: Chuck Kelly and Doris Jean Roberts.
Roger is survived by children: Jean M. Magee, of Gardner, Jeffrey Dean and wife Linda Kelly, of Allen, Kan., Jennifer S. Lapp, of Chuluota, Fla., Philip V. and wife Karen Kelly, of Augusta, Kan., John B. and wife Theresa Kelly, of Bonner Springs, Kan., and Karen A. Thurston, of Raleigh, N.C.; sister, Anna LaVerne Brown, of Bandera, Texas; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held 11:30 a.m., Oct. 6, 2012 at Bruce Funeral Home, Gardner, KS(913)856-7111. Burial follows at St. Columbia Catholic Cemetery, Gardner, Kan. Visitation 10 a.m., prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Gardner American Legion Post #19 or VFW Post #11234.
