The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. At Relay, teams camp-out around a walking path and take turns walking or running for a 24-hour period, because “cancer never sleeps.”
Relay For Life began in the mid-1980s with Dr. Gordy Klatt, a Tacoma, Wa., colorectal surgeon. He wanted to raise money for his local American Cancer Society office, and decided to combine something he loved, running marathons, with helping people. He ran around a track for 24 hours, with people donating $25 for every 30 minutes; in 1985 he raised over $27,000 single-handedly. The following year Relay For Life became a team event and has since raised over $4 billion worldwide. For 28 years, Relay For Life has provided inspiration and hope for millions of cancer survivors and caregivers. For more information about a Relay For Life, please visit LINK.
