Police to host Torch Run to benefit Special Olympics on May 31

The Gardner Police Department will partner with the local Special Olympics team, Gardner Gold, in a mini, law-enforcement torch run.

The first annual Gardner Community Torch Run will begin promptly at 8 a.m. at the intersection of Main Street and Moonlight on May 31. Gardner Gold Olympians will recite the Pledge of Allegiance and then officers and runners will depart from the intersection. They will run westbound down Main Street to the intersection of Main and Center Street.

Spectators are invited to line Main Street to cheer on the officers and Special Olympians as they carry the torch sponsoring Special Olympics. Following the run, a small ceremony will occur at Cornerstone Park, 136 E. Washington. Gardner Gold will also be on-hand conducting a fundraiser by selling water to help raise money for their organization.

Also on May 31, La Caretta Mexican Restaurant will donate 5 percent of daily sales to the Special Olympics Kansas.

The Gardner Police Department is also selling 2014 Law Enforcement Torch Run t-shirts for $20 per shirt. If you would like to purchase a shirt, please contact either Officer Erica Drinkard at edrinkard@gardnerkansas.gov or Officer Ilena Spalding at ispalding@gardnerkansas.gov. Purchases can be made at the Gardner Police Department or at the Torch Run. Cash or Checks are acceptable forms of payment.
