Police department to host drug take back event

The Gardner Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Agency will host a prescription drug disposal event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 27 at the Gardner Price Chopper. During the event, members of the public can bring their unused, expired or unwanted prescription drugs to Price Chopper for disposal. The service is free and no questions will be asked.
Since last September, Americans have turned in to law enforcement more than 244 tons of prescription drugs at more than 5,200 sites across the country.
According to law enforcement officials, medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse. The number of accidental poisonings and overdoses from prescriptions drugs are high in the U.S., and studies show that the majority of abused prescription medications are obtained from family and friends. Typical disposal methods, like flushing pills down the toilet or throwing them in the trash pose safety and health hazards.
