Senior Danie Plank grabbed gold medals in the shot put and discus leading the Lady Blazer track team to second place in the season opener at Shawnee Mission South March 30.
Plank tossed the shot put an area best 38’-1” and later threw the javelin 153’-5” –one of the top five throws in the nation this spring. She closed the day with fourth place points in the discus.
“Quite a performance to start the season,” said Coach Larry Ward. I was real proud of her effort.”
Equally impressive was Taylor Claybon who cleared the 300 hurdles in a second place time of 50.9 and placed fifth in the 100 meters in 13.3. Claybon also teamed with Sierra Coen, Abby Clabaugh and McKenzie Scroggin to place third in the 1600 relay in 4:21.6.
Scroggin teamed with Katie Groshong, Aly Daniels and freshman Miranda Tenove to finish second in the 4 mile relay in 25.04. Scroggin also placed 7th in the one mile race in 5:46.
Plank led a 1,2 3 sweep in the javelin as Jill Starling took second with a throw of 114”-6 “ and Jessica Cisneros claimed 3rd place with a 113’-6’ effort.
In the pole vault, Natalie Mitchell cleared 10’-0” for second place and Abby Buie took 5th place. Faith Jolly leaped to a 4th place in the long jump and took 5th in the triple jump.
“Overall, I was pleased with the performance,” said Ward. Our time on the track has been limited and we have a lot of work to do.”
Next action comes April 5 at the Olathe Invitational. Field events begin at 3:30 at the Olathe District stadium.
