OUR VIEW: Council adds truck scales to 2014 budget

Thanks to the Gardner City Council for adding portable truck scales to an updated version of the 2014 budget. Last week, we editorialized that the lack of scales were a critical oversight in the 2015 budget.
Council obviously heard our concerns, because members agreed to add funding to this year’s budget to acquire the scales. We are very grateful that they listened.
As the intermodal develops and reaches full build out, keeping overweight trucks from whizzing through downtown will become more and more of a priority.
At an estimated $30,000, we believe the expenditure is well-worth the price. Overweight streets destroy streets and heavy equipment rattles the sidewalks making strolling through town less pleasant than it could be.
We offer a lot of sticks in our editorials. So it’s only fair that we say, “thank you” when council listens
