Number of children living in high-poverty communities surges 229 percent in 10 years

TOPEKA — Nearly 46,000 Kansas children live in high-poverty areas — about 32,000 more since 2000 — according to a new KIDS COUNT Data Snapshot from the Annie E. Casey Foundation.
The latest data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey show that 7 percent of Kansas’ children are growing up in areas where at least 30 percent of residents live below the federal poverty level — about $22,000 per year for a family of four. In 2000, 14,000 kids, or 2 percent, were living in such communities, which often lack access to resources that are critical to healthy growth and development, including quality education, medical care and safe outdoor spaces.
The jump from 14,000 children in 2000 to 46,000 children in 2010 represents a 229 percent increase.
“Children who live in high-poverty areas face difficulties in almost all aspects of their lives,” said Shannon Cotsoradis, president and CEO of Kansas Action for Children. “Reducing poverty is not only the key to improving these children’s futures but also instrumental to the future success of our entire state.”
Counties in Kansas with areas of concentrated poverty and percent of that county’s children living in those areas:
• Crawford County — 15.5 percent
• Douglas County — 12.3 percent
• Ellis County — 7.7 percent
• Labette County — 6.2 percent
• Lyon County — 14.2 percent
• Montgomery County — 4.7 percent
• Neosho County — 12.7 percent
• Riley County — 17.6 percent
• Sedgwick County — 2.5 percent
• Shawnee County — 18.3 percent
• Wyandotte County — 26.9 percent

The new numbers parallel data released in the 2011 KIDS COUNT Data Book, which indicated a significant jump in child poverty over the past decade, as well as an increase in kids living in low-income families. Overall, 18 percent of all Kansas children are living in poverty.
More information is available in the KIDS COUNT Data Center, which also contains the most recent national, state and local data on hundreds of indicators of child well-being. The Data Center allows users to create rankings, maps and graphs for use in publications and on websites, and to view real-time information on mobile devices.

Disabilities program director raising concerns about Brownback’s Medicaid plans
    Wichita Business Journal
    Date: Monday, February 27, 2012, 7:46am CST
Tim Cunningham, director of Tri-Valley Developmental Services in Iola, says those who need services could struggle under Gov. Sam Brownback’s plan to privatize Medicaid services and put developmental disabilities programs under managed care.

The Iola Register reports that according to Cunningham, the only way the move could save money would be for the private business managing the program to reduce services or reduce the number of clients served.

  2. Judith Rogers says:

Kansas average credit score is 697 – how do you rate????

  3. Judith Rogers says:

If Brownback thinks this health care plan for Medicaid is so great and will save so much money, then let ALL governement employees including school employees be rolled over into this program and save the taxpayers some money and they can start with Gardner city employees and Brownback himself.

  4. Nate L says:

    SWOTI,

Never mind that Medicaid money is funded from a Federal government grant and must be used to support the healthcare with low income (it is what health insurance you would have if you didn’t qualify for medicare) and therefore would be exponetially more expensive if they attempted to add people who didn’t qualify for it.

Never mind, I know that you won’t let the real world interfere with your attempt to insult people!

Sorry, I’m practicing your DEEP THINKING technique in public debate.

  6. Judith Rogers says:

The new Warren Buffet from Nebraska has landed and he brings so much to the table……….NOT……..

Come on, if this managed health care plan is so wonderful for the poorest of the poor and will save us so much money, put all government workers on that plan and all taxpayers will save oodles in the process………….the bigger the better, right, Warren, also known as Nate L.??????????

  7. Nate L says:

SWOTI are you an idiot or do you just play one on the internet? Re-designing a medicaid program is completely different then creating a third party payer system to employees of the Federal Government. You can’t waive your SWOTI wand and just make the two comparable. Heck, why not put everyone in Canada on the plan too!!!!! That makes just as much sense. The Brownback plan, from what I have read, is attempting to provide Medicaid to low-income workers in a more efficient manner. One would assume that a good-government crusader like SWOTI would approve, but obviously anything that is done by the government is evil.

Oh, and I moved from Nebraska so you are comparing me to the 2nd richest man in the country. Oh boy… you zinged me there. OUCH, SWOTI called me Warren Buffet. *sniff sniff* You only have two rhetorical arrows in your quiver (1. Lying, and 2. Name calling) and you can’t even call me names right.

I happen to believe that Buffet is wrong on taxation, but only a small minded moron like you would consider it an insult to be compared to him.

You are from Kansas, so maybe I should call you a murder for killing the wicked witch and housing flying monkeys. Good one SWOTI….(you are still a poor lowlife).

  8. Nate L says:

I apologize, I may have been being too charitable, not low income workers, just low income people.

  9. Judith Rogers says:

Get those government workers and the politicians on a health care plan they are recommending for the poor and it is so great………let’s be more efficient by all means……….more efficient for all……………I can tell you are working hard today for your employer, lowlife, keep it up and I hope he nails you real soon and then you won’t have a job or health care and I will be forced to pay social costs for your sorry rearend………….

  10. Nate L says:

Based on your response I would go with stupid and not playing one on the internet. You keep saying the same thing even though it doesn’t make any sense. I don’t know why I expected anything different.

Once again thank you for your concern about my employment, but as I’ve stated on multiple occassions your logic is wrong and I can assure you that I will continue to be able to provide for my family.

Poor SWOTI, you can tell when you are losing an argument when you bypass your normal ‘lowlife’ comments and try and talk about my employment. Don’t you ever get tired of being WRONG all the time? Your brain isn’t highly developed enough to comprehend a logical argument, but I won’t hold it against you.

One would think that being wrong all the time would discourage someone from continuing on, but I have no fear you will be spewing lies and insults in no time flat. Next time why don’t you call me ugly by comparing me to Brad Pitt, he is soooo ugly.

Poor government dependent lowlife SWOTI, she wants to make sure that government is run more efficiently so she can keep more of the benefits for herself.

Meanwhile, children in this state are hurting.

  12. State of Affairs says:

There are medical drug shortages turning up about everyday. Just ask a pharmacist. For example, just recently, there is a Methotrexate (a cancer drug) shortage. (Not just oldsters, but children with leukemia count on this drug.) There is always a new ad, if you have taken this or that medication and had side effects or death of a family member, call the 1-800 number . . .

  13. State of Affairs says:

A vascular surgeon reports that 1/3 of her female patients with blood clots are related to birth control pills.

  14. Oh, gee, State... says:

Are you REALLY trying to tell us that the money-grubbing lawyer ads, fishing for fools they can use to milk money from whoever they can sue, are a rational indicator of anything other than money-grubbing lawyer greed? Try reading the sponsor for all those 1-800 ads about drugs. ALWAYS a law firm.

And if you really believe that those law firms are out to help the little people, you ought to try a little research on them. Those Brown and Krupen ads that brag so much about their win percentage? You ARE aware that most places like that won’t even take a case that they’re not already sure they can’t win? So if your personal case doesn’t fit a class action suit they’ve already got going, or if it has even the slightest chance they might not get the win, they won’t take it. Oops, sorry about your loss, but we have our “win” record to think of.

Yep, State. You make SUCH a compelling argument, quoting law firm ads…

  15. Judith Rogers says:

Let’s get Nate L. APPOINTED to the City Council………he would fit in so well…………..

  16. Nate L says:

You heard it here first! Judith Rogers endorses Nate L for city council!

SWOTI, I hope you don’t mind if I don’t broadcast your endorsement, but we will advertise it quietly and it will help move the poor lowlife demographic.

  17. Judith Rogers says:

Note how I stated you getting APPOINTED and note how I would hate to have you on that Council just like I didn’t want the last one appointed crammed down my throut………hopefully decent people would never elect you into office………….the big problem, however, it appears we have less and less decent people out there voting as evidenced by our most recent school bond issue where 60% of the registered voters didn’t even bother getting informed and educated on the issue nor did they vote. You put garbage in the system, you get garbage out of it.

  18. Nate L says:

Anyone who has read SWOTI’s posts knows she’s the master of garbage in / garbage out.

Of couse, she also defines ‘decent people’ as people who agree with her. It wouldn’t matter if there was 100% turnout, if she didn’t the results she would insult them. Sometimes it takes a lowlife to sniff out other lowlifes.

  19. State of Affairs says:

To Oh, gee, State…Ask a pharmacist, nurse, or a doctor (preferably that work in the hospital setting) and find out what medications are in shortage or are under fire. You might just get a big surprise. Then, come back and post a scoff at me.

  20. State of Affairs says:

Missouri has also reported there will be cuts in medicaid and will be investing the need of the recipants.

  21. State of Affairs says:

To Oh, gee, State…Local radio news just reported that the FDA is placing warning labels on statin medications (that lower cholesterol). One has to be careful and monitor liver function.

  22. State of Affairs says:

Bonner Springs couple being sentenced for public assistance fraud. They had 5 bank accounts and a second home.

  23. State of Affairs says:

From local radio news–Obama cuts health benefits to veterans again. (The second time I have heard of since he took office. I know it has affected our family veteran. So, don’t tell me that I don’t know what I am talking about.) Meaning our veterans will have to pay more on their own for their health care insurance.

I remember in 1995 under the Clinton cuts to the veterans, a veteran was on his own to pay $50,000.00 for his heart surgery. The veteran said that he fought for his country, put his life on the line, and was told that he would always have his health care covered. Now, he was on his own to pay $50,000.00 for his heart surgery. Why? He went to the doctor of his choice. Not one that the government would choose and would approve or not approve the surgery.

  24. State of Affairs says:

Further info released on the statin medications (Lipitor, Crestor, Zoocar). Prescribed to reduce cholesterol, but can increase blood sugar leading to diabetes. FDA will require warning labels.

  25. State of Affairs says:

Understand that John Edwards, attorney, former vice president and president candidate, represented a client that had a reaction to the flu vaccine. This case supposedly was “the straw that broke the camel’s back”. Now, our flu vaccines are not made in the USA, but overseas. So, get the government and the attorneys involved, and what do you get.

  26. @State says:

You should try reading other people’s posts. I was mocking the fact that you DIDN’T quote doctors or nurses from hospitals, but lawyers, as the source of all the so-called “bad drugs”.

Anyone who has actually DONE research into the high cost of drugs knows that the problem is a complicated mix of greedy lawyers driving up insurance costs and forcing drug companies to go to ridiculous lengths to avoid frivilous lawsuits, COMBINED with greedy drug companies who are out to make a buck, COMBINED with the very real and legitimate up-front cost of researching new drugs and bringing them to a public-ready state, COMBINED with the patent length of ownership, which sets a shorter window of time for drug companies to get back the up-front costs they put into developing their drugs.

If all you’re looking for are villains, then go aheard and listen to the lawyers and jump on every lawsuit bandwagon that comes around. And everyone else can go on paying higher insurance premiums as a result. Or you could actually look into some of these things for yourself before you weigh in on complicated issues and maybe save us all a little money in the process.
