The Southwest Johnson County Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) will charter Boy Scout Venture Crew unit in Gardner.
The Venture Crew is a youth development program of the Boy Scouts of America for men and women who are 14 years old or who have completed the eighth grade. Members must be younger than 21.
The Crew is looking to expand their membership and increase their participation in CERT activities by active involvement in not only classroom instruction, but also in field exercises. CERT also plans on assisting Crew members and others in the Scouting program by facilitating merit badge forums and other trainings.
Currently, the local club has approximately 10 members and is looking to expand. The crew plays a lot of basketball, mostly on weekends from April through August. Partnering with Special Needs Scouts, the Gardner Gold, and the YMCA Challenger Program, the Venture Crew has coordinated and facilitated mini-camps for basketball instruction for these organizations.
The next mini-camp for special needs athletes is scheduled for 10 a.m. to noon on April 19 at the King of Kings Lutheran Church in Gardner.
Parents of children interested in joining the Venture Crew can contact Mark Trivilino at (913)209-9324. More information is also available on the CERT Facebook page at Southwest Johnson County CERT or on the webpage at www.swjococert.com.
