USD 231’s newest schools will be called Grand Star Elementary and Trail Ridge Middle School.

School board members selected the names during a board meeting last week. They were forwarded two names for each school. The other names under consideration included Meadowlark Elementary and Buffalo Ridge Middle School.

Gary Diener, USD 231 Director of Operations told members that he could only find one Kansas school named for an animal – Black Bear Academy in Wichita.

Animals are usually reserved for mascots, Diener said.

A committee took name suggestions and pared the list that was forwarded to board members.

Grand Star Elementary School is under construction west of Plum Creek subdivision and is set to open next fall. Trail Ridge Middle School will open in fall 2014.

The schools are being built as part of a $73 million bond issue that voters approved in 2012. Board members set boundary lines for the new schools earlier this year.
