Dates have been set for informational meetings regarding the proposed $29.7 million USD 231 bond issue.
At the October 5, Board of Education meeting, the board voted unanimously to approve a resolution for application to the state to pose a $29.7 million dollar bond issue question to USD 231 voters. On November 10, the Kansas State Board of Education notified the school district that the application for the bond issue proposal was approved.
District patrons are invited to attend an informational meeting to learn more about the upcoming bond issue. Meets will be held:
December 1: District Offices Building, 231 E Madison Street, 6 p.m.
December 8: Edgerton Elementary, 400 W. Nelson, Edgerton, 6 p.m.
December 17: Gardner Edgerton High School, 425 N. Waverly St., 6 p.m.
If approved, the bond issue would add 18 classrooms and a separate career and technical education building to Gardner Edgerton High School. Previously, Jeremy McFadden, director of business and finance, has said the high school was originally designed to house 1,600 students. There are 1,519 GEHS students this year.
“The urgency is really watching the capacity of the high school get close to what it was designed for,” McFadden has said. The expansion would add capacity for approximately 600 additional students – about 450 students in a new wing of GEHS and about 150 students at a career and technical education building. The new building would be used for things like auto classes and culinary classes.
McFadden estimates the bond issue would not require increasing property taxes. Officials would use reserves to partially fund the high school expansion. McFadden’s estimates assume a bond interest rate of 4.75 percent and district wide property valuations increasing by an average of 3.5 percent annually.
With the high school expansion, GEHS would not reach capacity for another six to eight years, school officials estimate.
The bond issue proposal will go before the voters as a mail-in ballot with election date, February 2, 2016.  For USD 231 residents who are not registered to vote in Johnson or Miami counties, a registration form can be obtained by visiting http://www.jocoelection.org/voters/VoterRegistration.htm.
Registered voters will receive a ballot in the mail after Jan. 13, a postage paid envelope will accompany the ballot.
Election Timeline:
Jan. 12 – Last Day to register to vote for this election.
Jan. 13 – Mail-in ballot mailed to voters.
Feb. 2 – Ballots must be received at the Johnson County  Election Office by noon.
