M. Roberta Knabe, 96, of Edgerton, Kan. passed away April 27, 2013 at Kansas City Hospice House.
Roberta was born Nov. 25, 1916 on the family farm in Wellsville, Kan. to Robert C. and Flora Mabel (Sawhill) Warren. She graduated from WellsvilleHigh School and was a 1938 graduate of BakerUniversity earning her BS in Education and teaching high school in NeoshoFalls, Climax and Formoso, Kan.
Roberta married Wendell F. Knabe on June 25, 1944 in Edgerton. They made their home on the family farm and she raised chickens, selling the eggs.
She returned to teaching in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s at Gardner, Olathe and EdgertonElementary schools. She was a very active member of the EdgertonUnitedMethodistChurch, teaching Sunday school, singing in the choir and serving as church Treasurer and President of the UMW. Roberta was a member of HDU in Edgerton, serving on the McCamish Township Board, the Athena Club in Gardner and several book clubs. She served as Leader for the Sunny-side 4-H Club.
Roberta enjoyed gardening. Her family brought much joy into her life. She loved spending time with them and will be dearly missed.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Wendell in 1998 after 54 years of marriage, and brothers Victor and Paul Warren.
Roberta is survived by her son Robert D. Knabe, of Edgerton; daughter Louise M. Sawyer, of Ottawa, Kan.; four grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at the EdgertonUnitedMethodistChurch, 300 E 4th, Edgerton, KS. Burial will follow at Edgerton Cemetery, Edgerton. Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 30, 2013 at Bruce Funeral Home, Gardner, KS (913)856-7111. Memorial contributions may be given to the Edgerton United Methodist Church.
