A 53-47 home loss to Lawrence Free State in first round 6A sub state action brought the season to a close for Coach Jeff Langrehr and his GEHS varsity basketball squad Feb. 27.
The loss failed to overshadow an impressive season for the Blazers under the direction of Langrehr. The Blazers finished with a 12-9 overall record and a third straight third place finish in the rugged East Kansas league conference.
“I was real proud of the season we had,” said Langrehr. After a 2-5 start we recovered and were able to put together wins in 10 of the last 13 games regular season games. The kids played well late in the season and despite the sub state loss responded real well.”
In addition to third place in the East Kansas league, the Blazers won the mid season El Dorado tournament.
GEHS will miss seniors Matt Plank, Jamain Lang, Dilon Dodson, Trevor Clarke, Ben Carpenter and Michael Fikelkorn and standout shooting guard Kyle Huppe. Huppe earned first team East Kansas league honors and Traevohn Wrench earned second team honors. Matt Plank and Dilon Dodson were honorable mention.
The cupboard is not bare as promising young stars are on the horizon. Top returnees include Brett Wright, Wrench, Josh Lang and Kyle Hultgren.
Following the season, Langrehr applauded the efforts of assistant coaches John Bass, John Duncanson, Curtis Barnes, Andrew Easton and Corey Schrack.
