Gardner Edgerton High School junior Krista Long recently brought back a 10th place finish from the 6A state tennis meet at Maize South High School in Wichita Oct. 19-20.
Long, a number five seed, opened with a win versus the number four seed and then lost to the eventual state champion in round two.
Not to be outdone, Long won two straight matchups in the losers bracket and advanced to the second day of the tournament.
She defeated a number two seed and then lost. She placed 10th and concluded the season with a number one singles record of 26-11.
“Krista is one of the most mentally tough and coachable athletes I have ever had in the team” said Coach Derrick Abromeit. “She had a great state performance and defeated two higher ranked opponents.”
Long qualified for state with a fifth place regional finish at Lawrence High School, Oct. 12
“This was a transition year for the Blazer tennis team,” added Abromeit. “(Long) had excellent senior leadership and a commitment by the entire team to get better daily.”
