Three Johnson County 4-H youth competed at the 4-H Shooting Sports National Championships at Grand Island, Neb., on June 21-26.
Ethan Eccles, Gardner, Olivia Rogers, Gardner, and Bryce Zimmerman, De Soto, joined more than 600 youth from 32 states competing in nine shooting disciplines during three days of competition.
During the six day event, youth interact, practice, and compete with individuals and teams from around the U.S.  In addition to individual performances, team and state level competition is also developed. States may send up to four participants per discipline to make up their team. This gives 4-H’ers a great time to develop friendships with team members from other parts of Kansas.
It speaks well of Johnson County 4-H Shooting Sports program to send three to this event.  All three placed in the top 10 of their respective events at Nationals.
Rogers placed sixth overall in Small Bore Rifle. She competed with 77 competitors from 24 states. This helped the Kansas Small Bore Rifle team take first place. Competing against 65 competitors from 18 states, Zimmerman placed seventh overall in Muzzle Loader.  The Kansas Muzzle Loader team placed second and was coached by Barry Zimmerman. Ethan Eccles placed eighth overall in Air Pistol. Eccles competed against 48 competitors from 14 states. The Kansas Air Pistol Team placed second.  These performances helped the state of Kansas place third overall in the sweepstakes event.
Participants from Kansas are selected based upon their top placing at the Kansas 4-H State Match. Each youth may only attend the National match once in any discipline. For Bryce and Ethan, this was their third time at this Nationals event.
