Gieringers Orchard in Edgerton will play host to the Kansas Farmers Union on July 31. The union will tour Gieringers in Edgerton as part of a day long tour of specialty crop farms in the area.
Gieringers Orchard, 39675 W. 183rd St., grows peaches, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, sweet corn, blackberries and plums. The produce is sold at the Olathe and Overland park Farmers Markets and on their farm.
Tourists will also visit farms in Lawrence and dine at Smokey’s BBQ in Wellsville. Lunch will be provided at no cost to military veterans. Everyone from traditional farmers to backyard gardeners and consumers are welcome to attend.
Other farms on the tour include Soaring Eagle, which grows organic spelt, corn, wheat, clover seed and buckwheat; Pendleton’s Country Market in Lawrence, which grows vegetables, bedding plants and cut flowers; Red Tractor Farm in Lawrence, which grows vegetables and raises goats and chickens used in area restaurants; and Washington Creek Lavender, which makes sachets, dryer sheets, neck comforters with organically grown lavender.
The day will conclude at the Lawrence Farmers Market. Tuesday’s market is one of three held each week and features more than 80 growers, ranchers, bakers and craftspeople.
