LEON JOHNSON, JR.

Retired Master Sergeant Leon Johnson, Jr., 89, of Wellsville, Kan. passed away Aug. 1, 2014 at Wellsville Retirement Community.

Leon was born Aug. 29, 1924 in Kansas City, Mo. to Elizabeth (Hedstrom) and Leon Johnson, Sr. He was a 1942 graduate of Shawnee Mission Rural High School. Leon served in the U.S. Marines for 20 years retiring as a Master Sergeant.

Leon married Bobbie J. True on Aug. 15, 1953 in Merriam, Kan. They have lived in Edgerton, Wellsville and Gardner.

Leon was a mail carrier for the U.S. Post Office in Shawnee Mission for 25 years.

He was a member and Deacon of the Wellsville Baptist Church where he was known as “the candy man”. He was also a member of the Gardner VFW, and the Wellsville American Legion. Leon enjoyed golfing and was an avid reader. He was a dedicated fan of the Chiefs, the Royals and a loyal fan of the Jayhawks. He will be dearly missed by family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; step-mother, Josephine Kill Johnson; and brother Richard Johnson.

Leon is survived by his wife Bobbie, of the home; children Debbi Fouts (Randy) of Wellsville, Kan., Douglas Johnson (Tricia) of Overland Park, Kan., David Johnson (Patricia) of Wellsville, Kan. and Drew Johnson (Renee) of McPherson, Kan.; sister, Anita Eastland of Kansas City, Mo.; 12 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren and special companion Blossom.

Funeral services will be11 a.m., Aug. 7, 2014 at the Wellsville Baptist Church, 217 Main St., Wellsville, KS 66092. Burial will follow at Wellsville Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Aug. 6, 2014 at Bruce Funeral Home, Gardner, KS (913)856-7111.
