Austin Downing’s three-point shot at the buzzer spelled doom for the Spring Hill High School boys basketball team in a tough 48-45 season-opening loss at Eudora High School Friday night.
Eudora’s Downing, who scored a game-high 25 points, tied the game at 45-45 with just four seconds remaining and then stole an inbounds pass and sank the game winner.
“It was a disappointing ending to a very good game for us,” said first-year SHHS Coach Wes Book. “Both teams played real well.”
Spring Hill took control early leading 17-13 after one quarter and 25-19 at halftime.
But Eudora rallied to within 39-35 at the end of three quarters, and outscored Spring Hill 13-6 in the final stanza.
Despite the loss, Spring Hill got 13 points from Danny Hodge and 12 from Ivan Hughes. Trey Heinrich added seven points while Tyus Heinrich and Ryker Johnson had five points. Charles Elam had three points.
Spring Hill heads to the Osawatomie Invitational this week with action running through Dec. 12.
