Late Blazer rally falls short

A Tim Mitchell field goal from 35 yards out with just 16 seconds remaining in the game fell short and the Blazers dropped a hard fought 34-32 decision to the Lawrence Lions in first round 6A state playoff action at Trailblazer stadium Nov 2.

The loss failed to overshadow a gallant effort by Traevohn Wrench and  the Blazers in their first 6A state appearance. The team trailed 22-17 at halftime and never quit battling back. The team rallied to within 28-25 and 34-32 before bowing in the final seconds.

Mitchell pulled the Blazers within 8-3 at the 3.54 mark of the first period with a 30 yard field goal.  Wrench, who had over 300 yards on a record 50 carries, scored on a 1 yard plunge to open the second quarter and the Blazers trailed just 14-10.  Following a Lawrence score,  Quarterback Jared Hobby hooked up with Jaylon Radel on a 29 yard Td pass on a fourth down and 11 yard call. That left the score 22-17 at halftime.

Lawrence kept up the pace. Quarterback Brad Strauss, who had over 300 yards passing and accounted for 4 Lion scores , went to work. He scored on a 2 yard run at the 9.24 mark of the third quarter and Lawrence owned a 28-17 lead.  Back came the Blazers with a 2 yard Wrench TD  and conversion run to pull within 28-25 at the end of three quarters.

The teams traded fourth quarter scores before the Blazers final rally fell just short.

The loss left GEHS at 6-4 on the season and halted a 5 game win streak. The team won their first 6A district title with convincing wins against Olathe South, Olathe North  and Olathe Northwest. Lawrence moved to 8-2 on the season and advanced to second round action against Shawneee Mission West Nov 9.
