Despite the loss of Cassie Wait and Danie Plank, GEHS veteran coach Larry Ward remains optimistic about the upcoming track season.
A year ago, Wait set a state record pole vault of 13’2” and Plank won her fourth straight state javelin title.
Ward will regroup around the likes of Abby Buie (Pole Vault), Taylor Claybon (Hurdles) and also will have a strong group of participants in the throwing events.
“The 2014 season will be a challenge with small numbers in the sprints and only one returning state medalist, Abby Buie the pole vaulter,” added Ward.
Besides Buie, other returning state qualifiers are Miranda Tenove (800), Jill Starling (javelin), Sierra Coen (800), and Katie Groshong (3200, 800).
Other top returners include Taylor Claybon (100-300 hurdles), Macy Elkington (Shot put, discus, and javelin) and Karli Smith (Pole Vault).
Providing pivotal points will be Mckenna Douglass (Sprints), Marissa Gray (throwing events), Mady Mueller (High Jump), Daunisha Kendrick (throwing events), Jordan Eubank (Sprints) and Abbie Lane (hurdles).
The season begins April 5 at the Shawnee Mission South Invitational.
