September 6, 2014 – Over 50 kids participated in the 2014 Kids Fishing Derby on Saturday. The Derby is held every year every year at Gardner Lake, sponsored by the City of Gardner Parks and Recreation Department. The Derby is co-sponsored by the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks and Cops N’ Bobbers. Other contributors were Price Chopper, Wal-Mart, Dick’s Sporting Goods and the Kansas Wildscape Foundation.
The kids gathered at the public area at the lake dam and at noon the fishing began. Worms and fishing poles were provided for anyone who didn’t have their own. Hot dogs and chips were offered for lunch and every kid got a prize and a goody bag for participating.
The banks and docks were lined with youngsters enjoying the outdoors, fishing with mom, dad or grandpa. The kids landed perch, bass, catfish, and several turtles – but turtles don’t count!
When a fish was caught, it was taken to one of the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks onsite representatives, who officially logged and measured the catch.

Adraina Holopirek, Recreation Supervisor with the City Parks and Recreation Department, and Larry Shoops of Cops N’ Bobbers hosted the event. Every few minutes they would call out 2 kids names over a bullhorn, who got to come up and choose a prize, such as fishing poles, lanterns and other outdoor items.
At 1:30, an air horn was sounded, signalling the end of the competition. Everyone gathered at the shelter where trophies and medals were awarded for smallest, biggest and most fish caught.

Biggest Fish – Leala Swisher
Smallest Fish – Lillian Tinberg
Most Fish – Jai Lynn Rogers
In the 8 to 13 category:

The City of Gardner has held this event in late summer every year for over 10 years.
