Joel Best

Joel Christopher Best, 38, of St. George, Utah, formerly of Gardner, Kan., passed away May 26, 2013.

Joel was born June 30, 1974 in Smithville, Mo. to Aubrey Kent and Theresa Jean (Jeconis) Best. He attended Gardner schools, Kemper Military School and graduated from Shawnee Mission Northwest in 1993. Joel had lived in Utah for 14 years; previous to that he lived in Miami, Fla. He married Jennifer “Jen” Wyckoff on May 11, 2002 in Kansas City, Mo. Joel had been employed in marketing. He loved the ocean, especially swimming and surfing.

Dear Rock: Your family loved you with all their hearts and more. If you could have ever understood, you never had to be anything more than yourself. We loved the adult that was the happiest kid and loved not only your children, but when the cousins were ready to play, you were there at the drop of a hat.

All of us tried to help you. We tried to get you help to be able to help yourself, yet the bipolar depression caused you a level of pain that none of us could possibly grasp.

Please God, if you see a person dressed to the 9’s leading a sales seminar, or a grown looking adult leading the children to a park to play or a person on any given Sunday dressed in Chiefs garb hoping for a Chiefs victory, don’t think anything about it, it’s our husband, dad, son, brother, uncle, cousin or friend.

Joel is survived by his wife, Jennifer and four children: Zoe, JJ, Arielle and step-daughter Bailey; his mother, Theresa J. Best, of Gardner; his father, A. Kent Best and step-mother Gayle M. Best, of Lake Quivira, Kan.; two brothers, Trevor K. (wife Heather), of Gardner and Matthew D. (wife Kelly), of Lee’s Summit, Mo.; sister, Courtney J. Best-Person (husband Joe), of Maryland Heights, Mo. and step-sister, Greta M. Gleissner, of New York, N.Y. He is also survived by his grandmother, Donna J. Best Epler, of Cheyenne, W.Y.; uncles, Mark R. Best (wife Toni), of Longmont, Colo., Ken Burns; aunt, Patti J. Best Burns, both of Cheyenne, W.Y.; nephews, Davis D. and Kalel K.; nieces, Elektra J., Aubrey R. and Layla J. and cousins, Michael and Brian.
