JoAnn Wood Shippee

1923-2013
JoAnn Wood Shippee, 90, of Gardner, Kansas passed away Thursday, November 8, 2013, surrounded by her husband and three sons at the Olathe Medical Center, Olathe, KS.

To honor her life, a visitation will be held November 12th, 2013 at the First Presbyterian Gardner Church, 138 East Shawnee, Gardner, KS, from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm, with a tribute beginning at 7:30 pm.

JoAnn was born October 24th, 1923 at the Commonwealth Hospital in Boston, MA and graduated from Providence High School in Providence Rhode Island. JoAnn entered the United States Marine Corp December 28, 1943, as a machine operator and general clerk. She married Lieutenant Robert J. Shippee on April 7, 1945, in Cherry Point North Carolina. After her service, JoAnn and Robert moved to Holt, Missouri; in 1948, they purchased a farm in Edgerton, KS where they raised three sons, Jim, Bill and Jon. They later moved to Gardner, KS, where she lived until her death.

JoAnn was a loving mother and dedicated her life to raising her three sons on the family farm; she later shared her love and time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading, making ceramics, knitting, painting, working in her flower garden, collecting blue bird memorabilia and visiting with friends.

JoAnn worked at The Hercules Ammunition Plant in De Soto, KS, the Gardner News, Prairie Printing and Shawnee Copy Center. JoAnn belonged to the Women Marines Association (life member), Eastern Star, Harry S. Truman Library Institute, National Association for Uniformed Services, National Women’s History Museum, American Legion and National Grange.

JoAnn is survived by her loving husband Robert; three sons, Jim Shippee (Georgia) of Gardner, Bill Shippee (Sheri) of Shawnee, and Jon Shippee (Sherry) of Shawnee; four granddaughters, Kara Shippee Manqueros (Ken), Sheena Shippee (Joel), Jessica Shippee McDaniel (Drew), and Brooke Shippee; and four great-grandchildren, Matthew, Tyler, Meghan and Magnolia Jo.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Patricia Wood.

Private graveside services will be arranged at later date.
