The website of the Johnson County Board of County Commissioners has a more modern look and feel.
The board’s new website, launched Jan. 23, was redesigned to make it easier for citizens to use, providing simpler navigation, new content, and interactive features. The website address is http://bocc.jocogov.org.
“We revised the board’s website to create an informative, useful site for the general public,” Ed Eilert, chairman of the board, said. “Our goal: to encourage more citizen participation and to allow Internet users better access to the Board of County Commissioners, County Government, and the many services and programs we provide.”
The website was redesigned by Melissa McChesney, deputy clerk in the Office of the Board of County Commissioners, and Brett Williamson, programmer analyst for the county’s Department of Information Technology Services.
Among the useful items available through the website are:
• A Find My Commissioner link allowing residents to enter their home address and receive information about their commission district and which county commissioner represents them, along with information about their state representatives, voting site, utility providers, and the nearest school, park, and recreation trail near their home;
• A Frequent Question section that includes an Ask a Question option that allows users to submit questions to the Board of County Commissioners, an individual commissioner, or office staff for a response;
• A subscription option where users can provide their email information to receive notifications of meetings, calendar information, press releases, and annotated agendas of Board meetings;
• A direct link to the broadcasting of the Board’s weekly business sessions that start at 9:30 a.m. Thursday in its hearing room (Suite 3300) in the Johnson County Administration Building, 111 South Cherry Street, in downtown Olathe;
• Dropdown bars with information about the Board, each of the commissioners, along with legislative information and details about advisory boards and commissions;
• A County News section and Calendar that highlight all current and relevant county news and local events and meetings; and,
• Access points to records research and county codes.
The website will continue to undergo changes and updates, as needed. It uses the Drupal Content Management System, an open access software, at no significant cost to the county. The system is featured in more than 400,000 websites worldwide.
Drupal users include the cities of Olathe and Lawrence, Warner Brothers Records, and several federal websites, such as the White House, NASA, Department of Energy, U.S. Trade Office, and Go.USA.gov.
