The Pioneer Ridge Middle School seventh grade boys relay team of Luke Laskowski, Devlin Specht, Rees Taylor and Wyatt Hollingshead set school records and brought back gold medals from the Frontier League meet in Ottawa, May 6.
Laskowski, Taylor, Specht and Hollingshead took gold in the 400 meter relay in 51.4 and later set a new school record of 1:52 in winning the 800 relay.
All told, the seventh grade boys finished second behind host Ottawa in the team standings. The eighth grade boys finished in sixth place.
“The boys teams finished strong at league and showed a lot of improvement,” said Coach Gordon Thiesfeld. “They were very dedicated and coachable. We were very proud of their effort.”
Hollingshead added a third place finish in the 100 meter hurdles and bronze medals went to Taylor at 200 meters, Leon Gaeta in the 400 meter dash and Reid Frase in the pole vault.
For the eighth grade boys, the team of Kolbee Finnell, Jared Highfill , Zach Mitchell and Jonas Pippitt finished first in the 400 and 800 meter relays. The other gold went to Jastin Lucero in the pole vault.
Finnell claimed second place in the long with a new school record leap of 17’3”.
“The kids performed real well at the league meet considering the amount of practice time,” added Thiesfeld. “Inclement weather limited the amount of outside practice time. Still, the kids stepped up and came through with top performances.”
