It took an overtime period, but the Pioneer Ridge Middle School seventh-grade varsity football squad defeated crosstown rival Wheatridge Middle School 12-6 at Wheatridge, Sept. 23.
WMS, 0-2, jumped to a 6-0 first-half lead thanks to a long touchdown run by quarterback Nolan Beets.
PRMS finally found an answer in the fourth quarter. Ryan Edwards, who rushed for 144 yards on 14 carries, scampered 65 yards to tie the score at 6-6.
Edwards benefitted from up front blocking by offensive linemen Ashton Guthrie, Andrew Halverson, and Chase Abram.
In overtime, Edwards once again made the difference. He bulled his way through several Mustang defenders and found the end zone.
Meanwhile, the Jag defense held WMS on its four overtime plays and held on for victory.
“I was real pleased with our team defense,” said Coach Jeff Davidson. “Every time the Mustangs had a long drive, our ‘D’ came up with a big play to stop the drive.”
Besides Edwards, Tony Walker added 29 yards on seven totes and Jonathan Bangert had 11 yards on four carries.
Defensively, Edwards had 10 tackles, Guthrie, six; and Halverson, five.
PRMS, now 3-0, continued its season Sept. 28 at Ottawa. Results were not available at press time.
