Jared Highfill’s basket with 6 seconds remaining in OT lifted the Pioneer Ridge eighth grade boys varsity basketball team to a 33-32 home win against Monticello Trail, Jan. 22
Tied 27-27at the end of regulation, Trail went up 29-27 on a quick basket in OT.
The Blazers tied the score at 29 on a driving lay up by Zach Bass.  After a Monticello basket, Nate Wagner tied the score with a long shot from the right corner.  After a Monticello free throw, point guard Conner Boyt found Highfill open on the right wing for the eventual game winner.
“This was a good win for us,” said Coach Kevin Collins. The game was close all the way and our kids found a way to win it.”
Bass led a balanced scoring attack with 9 points while Highfill and Boyt added 6 apiece.  Nolan Quiring and Wagner had 4 points while Blake Nichols and Jake Zink, 2 points.
Things proved a bit closer Jan. 24 as Paola escaped with a 33-30 Frontier league win.  Pioneer trailed by 3 points in the closing seconds and couldn’t cash in a last second play.
Despite the loss, Wagner netted a season high 13 points, including 3 treys. Bass had 5 points, Highfill and Boyt, 4. Quiring and Tim Wood had 2 points.
Now 5-3, Pioneer remains home to host Piper and Eudora this week.
