Harold Wayne Hughes

Harold Wayne Hughes, 56, of Spring Hill, Kan. passed away March 28, 2012 at Olathe Medical Center.

Harold was born Dec. 12, 1955 in Gainesville, Texas to Houston A. B. and Lenora A. (McAnally) Hughes. He was raised in Texas and Oklahoma, and joined the U.S. Army in 1975.

Harold graduated from the police academy and joined the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department in 1980. He worked in detention and patrol before becoming a detective in 1992. He helped establish the crime scene unit and later was promoted to Sergeant over the CSI Unit of the Jo Co Sheriff’s Office. He retired in 2008 after 28 years.

He has lived in Spring Hill since the 1980’s.

Harold was always willing to share his vast knowledge and he volunteered and was deployed to assist in recent national disasters such as Hurricane Katrina.

Harold married Kayla Crackenberger Stafford on Sept. 1, 2000 in Olathe.

He enjoyed spending his retirement hunting game instead of criminals. He also enjoyed riding horses. Harold will be dearly missed.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Harold is survived by his wife Kayla, of the home; children Amy Trentadue and Brandon of Olathe, Kan., Cory Hughes and Briana of LaCygne, Kan., Amber Thurman and Robert of Kansas City, Kan.; step daughter Casey Stafford, of the home; mother Lenora Barnes and John of Gainesville, Texas; sister Susie Drummonds of Sherman, Texas; six grandchildren and the children’s mother Brenda McDonald and John.

Graveside funeral services with an honor detail from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Dept and Military Honors will be 11 a.m., April 2, 2012 at Spring Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., April 1, 2012 at Bruce Funeral Home, Spring Hill, KS (913) 592-2244. Memorial contributions may be made to the Kansas Law Enforcement Memorial Foundation.
