Global markets continue to play role in Kansas agriculture

Kansas farmers, ranchers and agribusinesses sold more than $4 billion in agriculture products to foreign customers in 2012. Data for 2012 is not yet available, but officials anticipate 2013 was a very good year for Kansas agricultural exports.
According to Kansas Department of Agriculture, meat, primarily beef, generated more than $1 billion in annual revenue in 2012. That’s a 5 percent increase over 2011. Ceral grains also produced more than $1 billion in annual sales.
More than 95 percent of consumers of Kansas agricultural products live outside of the United States. It’s likely that steaks processed in Garden City, Kan., flour milled in Stafford County, Kan., ethanol distilled in Garnett, Kan., and salsa made in Kansas City, Kan., made their way to destinations like Canada, Mexico, Germany, Nigeria and Russia in 2012.
