The GFWC Athena Club held their regular meeting on Wed, Feb.20, 2013 at the home of Arlene Thompson of Gardner. Co-hostess was Ms. Doris Smith. We are an active Club doing volunteer service in the Gardner and Edgerton communities for 90 years.
Special guests attending the meeting were Kayla and Stephen Kramer with their Mother Renee Kramer, Cooper Mc Guire with his Mother Robin, Hailee Taylor and Cody Bastion. These students were there for our Fine Arts Emphasis Day. Cooper, Kayla and Stephen shared their musical talents with us doing a couple of pieces each. Cooper will be representing our GFWC Athena Club at the State Contest March 9, 2013 in Lindsborg, Kansas. This is Cooper’s second year to qualify for the State Contest and he has a chance to earn a $500 Scholarship. Gardner-Edgerton Seniors Hailee Taylor and Cody Bastion Art Students shared their beautiful Art pieces. Hailee’s was a pastel chalk piece titled “Love Birds” and Cody’s was a pencil and ink work titled, “Dragon”. Members of the Athena Club asked each of the students several questions regarding their enjoyment of the Fine Arts. We were very thankful these students were able to come and share with us. We also thanked Club member Minnie Ashmore for her contacting them to attend our meeting. After the students and Mothers departed, we began our regular business meeting.
Club members answered the roll call: The Most Amazing thing you have seen in the Night Sky.  Our answers varied from shooting stars, the Northern Lights, the Haley Comet and gorgeous sunrises and sunsets.
