GFWC Athena Club News

Juanita Rothaus, Club reporter
The GFWC Athena Club held their regular meeting on  Sept.19, 2012 at the Johnson County Library Gardner branch.  This begins our 90th year of active Club service in the Gardner and Edgerton communities. It was a sad day for us though, as we took a moment of silence to remember fellow Athena Club members Naoma Kincaide, and Margie Babcock. Naoma died on Sept.16 at the Olathe Medical Center. Members were asked to sign a card for the family, and details of the visitation and Naoma’s Memorial service were shared.
Special guests attending the meeting were Roberta Gay, and Dave Kalkman, with Dylan Carroll a student from the Gardner High School.  Dylan brought an art piece that he drew depicting the Grand Canyon…our topic of study of the day.  GFWC Athena Club members shared interesting facts about the Grand Canyon in roll call with 15 members in attendance.
Club member Kathy Baker was recognized as the International Club Creative Writing winner, and she shared a little about the International Convention she attended. Norma Voigts club member was also recognized as an ESO member who has read many books during the last year.
Roberta Gay was presented to be a new club member by Mayrene Norris and Minnie Ashmore. Our vote was a resounding: “Yes”!  Welcome to the club Roberta.
We conducted our reports and regular business meeting with the nominations of two delegates to attend the Second District Convention to be held in Paola, on Oct. 27, 2012.
Hostesses for the event were Peggy Deaton, Fern Coffin and Jerrine Reed.  The tables were decorated with photos of the Grand Canyon, and the colors of the canyon highlighted with beautiful scarves.
The GFWC Athena club is looking for new members and if you would be interested you may check us out this fall at our next meeting on Oct.18th .  Club members and guests are to wear “pink” for cancer awareness. You may contact any club member for more information or contact Juanita Rothaus at JROTHAUS@kc.rr.com for more details.  We would love to have you be our guest.
