Gera Laurine Sawyer

Gera Laurine Sawyer, 91, of Wellsville, formerly of Gardner, passed away March 6, 2013 at Wellsville Retirement Center.

Gera was born Aug. 13, 1921 in St. Francis, Kan. to Tommie LeRoy and Gladys Evelyn (Scott) Johnson. She lived in Missouri and Colorado and graduated from Metz High School in Metz, Mo. Gera attended college in Warrensburg, Mo. and later moved to Gardner to teach at Carroll School which was a one-room school.

She married Arthur LaVern Sawyer on Feb. 14, 1944 in Gardner, Kan.  

Gera was a long-time member of the United Methodist Church in Edgerton, an active member of the Johnson County Extension, the Dizzy Doers EHU and the Docey Dandies square dance group. She loved gardening and was a great crafter, especially with beads. Gera designed and made her daughter’s wedding dress and also made matching outfits for her square dance group. She took pride and devoted a lot of time to everything she did. Gera will be dearly missed by family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; infant daughter, Gera Louise Sawyer and an infant brother.

Gera is survived by her husband, LaVern, of the home; children, Neal and Donna Sawyer, of Shawnee, Kan., Byerl and Karen Sawyer, of Atlanta, Ga., Avis and Michael Pyle, of Overland Park, Kan., Keith Sawyer and Yvonne Pellechia, of Wellsville, Kan.; sister Gyneth Goodwin, of Mt. Vernon, Mo.; 11 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held 2 p.m., March 30, 2013 at Bruce Funeral Home, Gardner, KS (913)856-7111. Visitation will be held at 1 p.m., prior to the service at the funeral home. Private family inurnment at a later date at the Edgerton Cemetery, Edgerton, Kan. Memorial contributions may be made to the Gardner Historical Museum.
