GEHS’ Plank scores 24 points in Blazer loss

Despite 24 points from senior Danie Plank,  the Lady Blazers dropped a 48-43 decision at Blue Valley Southwest Dec. 14.
“We came out and executed our game plan,” said Coach Scott Schaefer. “I was proud of the effort.”
Southwest owned a 12-10 first quarter lead  but saw the Blazers rally to within 21-20 by halftime. Plank’s three pointer tied the score early in the third period but Southwest scored seven straight points and went up 31-24. By the end of the quarter Southwest held a 38-29 advantage.
Plank sank another three pointer to start the fourth quarter and the Blazers pulled within six points. Abby Buie also sank a trey but it wasn’t enough to close the gap.
Besides Plank, ShelbeVanDeBerghe had 8, Angeliece Tucker, Harley Rousselo and Buie had 3 points and Kyra Burcham. 2.
It was a different story Dec 11 as the Blazers posted a hard fought 29-20 home win against Olathe North.
“It was nice to get a win,” said Schaefer. “It makes all the hardwork pay off.”
Gardner Edgerton High School trailed 8-6 after one quarter but went on a 7-0 run and capped the quarter with a VanDeBerghe trey. That gave GEHS a 17-11 halftime lead. The Blazer defense held North to just two points in the third quarter and GEHS claimed a 24-12 lead.
The Blazers withstood a late North rally and posted their first win of the season.
VanDeBerghe led a balanced scoring attack with nine points while Tucker added seven points. Plank had four, Rousello three, Haley Dellinger, Buie and Burcham,two points.
Now 1-3 , GEHS concluded their pre holiday portion of the schedule with a home game against Blue Valley North Dec. 20.  Results were not available at press time.
