On a visit to the campus of Kids TLC, a local youth psychiatric facility, Ava Laffoon noticed the children playing on a weathered swing set. Ava, 10 of Gardner, began raising funds to upgrade the playground equipment at the center. Through her efforts, she raised $11,000 to repair the existing play equipment and to purchase a basketball hoop and other outside toys for Kids TLC.
For her efforts Kohl’s Department Stores has awarded Ava a $1,000 scholarship to be used for higher education. Ava was one of two youths from the Kansas City metropolitan area to receive the award. She was selected from more than 37,000 nominees nationwide.
Winners are chosen based on initiative, leadership, generosity and project benefits and outcome. Each regional-level winner qualifies for one of Kohl’s 10 national scholarships, which will be announced at the end of July. National winners will each receive a total of $10,000 in scholarships, and Kohl’s will donate $1,000 to a nonprofit organization on each national winner’s behalf. In total, Kohl’s will recognize more than 2,300 young volunteers with nearly $400,000 in scholarships and prizes.
