Gardner Chamber of Commerce hosts annual meeting

Gardner Area Chamber of Commerce President Steve Devore, at the chamber’s annual meeting Wednesday, called the March 2 recall election a “new movement in the history of our community.”

Devore told attendees of the meeting at the Olathe Holiday Inn that the community now must continue with business as usual.

“I have chosen, just like I hope many of you will, to not look at the events of last week as a moment in the history of the community, but as a new movement in the history of our community,” Devore said. “Regardless of your personal position on the issue, we all must agree that now is the time to move forward.”

Devore presented chamber members with at least two ways his organization is moving forward with encouraging local residents to become involved with businesses in town. The chamber has hired a consultant to renovate its Web site, and it has enlisted help in designing a logo promoting shopping locally.

“It instills the concept to think locally,” Devore said before his address began. “I hope it’s going to be as iconic of a design as our own (chamber) logo. It transcends the chamber – it’s each business supporting one another.”

Perhaps even more importantly, according to Devore, is the willingness to embrace growth within the community, making it an ideal place to live.

“We must work hard to build consensus within our community that growth is good and change is unavoidable,” he said. “We must aggressively promote (the concept) that our region will continue to be a premier destination for families and businesses to co-exist.”
The annual meeting also included a silent auction and social hour before Devore’s address, during which time chamber members and supporters chatted with one another.
