There are two things you can count on at the beginning of August in Gardner: The ever increasing volume of Cicadas singing in early evening and Fair Week. The first week of August is an opportunity to head out to the fairgrounds and rekindle your sense of community. There are abundant opportunities to catch up with acquaintances over a fresh-squeezed lemonade. You can spend a few evenings admiring the work of all the 4-H participants from various projects like woodworking to the hours of work spent raising a prize hog. There will be those semi-professional gardeners vying for bragging rights over the best tomato, cucumber or zucchini and of course the beautiful flowers that will be entered. Our family has always enjoyed the Johnson County Fair, it has been part of our lives here in Gardner and has produced some great memories. Every year we see familiar faces and new ones as well. I hope many of you find Fair Week an opportunity to create a tradition with your families as we did.
