EDITORIAL: Kansas Representative shouldn’t resign; people should fire him

Rep. Virgil Peck, R-Tyro, is obviously too stupid to serve, but since smarts don’t appear to matter to most members of the voting public, there’s no reason to expect Peck to render his resignation.

The Republican member of the Kansas House is under fire for comments he made a few weeks ago during a House committee meeting. The committee was debating the merits of sharpshooters in helicopters killing feral hogs.

“Looks like to me, if shooting these immigrating feral hogs works, maybe we have found a (solution) to our illegal immigration problem,” he said.

The comments, which Peck later apologized for making, are insensitive at best and racist and bigoted at worse. And yes, he’s an embarrassment to his party and to our state, but the political game of demanding a resignation every time a politician sticks a foot in his mouth is demeaning to our political process.

We have an election every two years for seats in the Kansas House, and the people of Peck’s district were either bamboozled enough to elect him or they agree with him. It’s their responsibility to rid themselves of him – not the Democratic Party’s. And not the Republican Party’s either.

We want to give Rep. Peck the benefit of the doubt – that his comment, while cruel and shameful – was a crass attempt at humor. We don’t know many people who haven’t said something they deeply regret at one time or another.

That said, making that type of comment in a public committee meeting shows a stunning lack of judgment. And that should be of great concern to Republican Party leadership and to his constituents. We hope the voters in his district will keep that in mind when they head to the polls in 2012.
