EDITORIAL: Kansas House, enough with the strip clubs

Strip the Kansas House to its skivvies, and you’re left with little logic and goofy priorities.
For the second time, a majority of the Kansas House adopted a bill that strips the adult entertainment industry of some of its gusto.

The bill outlaws  fully nude dances and  lap dances. Under the bill, pole dancers would be required to stay at least 6-feet from customers. The law also would require the adult businesses to shutter between midnight and 6 a.m. Currently, they’re allowed to be open until 2 a.m.

We don’t understand the Kansas House’s exotic need to more stringently regulate existing businesses when there are so many more pressing issues on the table. The largest, of course, is a gaping budget hole despite a 1 cent sales tax increase last year.

For once, we think members of the Senate are thinking more clearly than those in the House.

Those in the know in Topeka, including many supporters of the House bill, say it will stall in the Senate. We hold out little hope that the Senate will do anything else worth cheering as the 2011 Legislative Session winds to a close.

But we like to give credit where credit is due.

Now isn’t the time to increase regulations on any industries – even those we find particularly ill-conceived. Those dancers and business owners are, for the moment, creating jobs and tax revenues.

And no, that doesn’t mean we believe the state should legalize prostitution. It simply means our leaders should be concentrating on things of consequence right now.

Once they’ve solved the budget crisis and the economy is once again roaring, we can talk about whether strip joints should be allowed to offer lap dances.

Stop all ready!!! Were they voted in to help change the current direction of our economy?!? To find ways to create jobs?!? or do you really think voters put them there to legislate their morality onto us? This is the reason I think the Tea Party are nothing more than Republican extremists. Where are they now? Why aren’t they screaming for “Less Government”, now? These people make me sick. They’ll spend time and money on something like this? Shame on them!

  2. AgreeWu says:

They’ve proven themselves to be nothing more than a bunch of religious zealots. They are no different than the Muslim extremists who want to enslave women, first attacking her right to choose then attempting to keep her from earning a living. My vote will be different in the next election because these clowns have taken their eyes off the ball.
