Edgerton Elementary School is planning on honoring long-time teacher’s aide, Joyce Higginbotham.
Higginbotham, who passed away at age 62 on Feb. 23, worked at Edgerton Elementary for more than 25 years. One of her main responsibilities at the school was as recess supervisor. Her duties included being in charge of both outdoor and indoor recesses.
In addition to supervising the children on the playground, and inside for recess when necessary, Higginbotham was also in charge of playground equipment and materials, often buying games and activities for indoor recess with her own money and providing candy to the students.
“Joyce did a great job here. She was a true lover of children. She did a lot for the kids here,” Nancy Woolery, Edgerton Elementary Principal said.
Higginbotham had four children of her own. After her death, her family contacted Woolery with the idea for some way to honor their mother’s memory and her service to Edgerton Elementary.
They came up with the idea to purchase an indoor recess cart. In addition to a recess cart, the memorial contribution will also include materials to be put on the cart to be used for indoor recesses at the school. A plaque will be attached to the cart in honor and memory of Joyce Higginbotham.
The family and the school have already received several contributions for the cart, and school staff will also contribute to the fund.
Woolery said she hopes the cart and equipment will be purchased and in use later this spring. The school will dedicate the cart and materials during an all-school event. Higginbotham’s family will be invited to attend.
“I know Joyce is smiling down on all of us. The students meant the world to her,” Woolery said.
Those interested in donating to the memorial recess cart fund can call Edgerton Elementary at (913)856-3500 or drop by the school. Checks can be made payable to Edgerton Elementary with a notation that the money is for the Joyce Higginbotham Recess Cart Fund.
