Conservatives cede middle ground with silence

Danedri Thompson
Conservatives are ceding the middle ground to liberal talking points every day. It’s not that we aren’t principled – it’s that conservatives, by nature, seek not to offend. By doing so, we’re losing a very important battle – that for the hearts and minds of the American people.
Nowhere is it more obvious than on Facebook where my more liberal peers shout from the rooftop about every perceived injustice and conservative slight.
I have many more conservative than liberal friends. Many of whom I see regularly at actual in-person events like the annual Kansas GOP Convention. They’re strangely silent when this very important cause wins a victory.
During the government shutdown, for example, my liberal friends went off the reservation decrying conservatives for not supporting the increasingly unpopular ObamaCare.
It’s the law of the land, they screamed via Facebook meme. Just get over it.
Nevermind that slavery was once the law of the land, too. And actually, so is the debt ceiling. That’s a law as well, but woe to the Congressional person who isn’t negotiating right now to raise the limit, or change that law.
Meanwhile, the message that conservatives are bad – that Sen. Ted Cruz is and extremist of the devil incarnate – is likely the only message people on the fence are hearing.
The radio silence from conservatives, who should be screaming everyday from the rooftops about the Obama Adminstration’s spiteful attempts to make the American people “feel the pain” of the shutdown, is almost deafening. President StompyFoot and friends in the Spite House are denying military death benefits to the families of fallen shoulders during the shutdown, but Big Bird and his friends on public television received their $445 million in the middle of the federal shutdown.
The virtual silence of conservatives damages our cause, because it makes other people less likely to join us in this important fight to limit the ever-expanding and vicious power of the federal government.
That’s a problem
I’m guilty of it, too. I don’t want to offend my friends. I don’t want to start a debate, but I’m beginning to realize the silence of one side only helps to further the idea that the principles I hold dear are somehow wrong, or something that must be whispered about in the dark corners of the underworld or not spoken of in polite company.
The silence is wrong, and I’m not going to do it anymore.

  1. Jerry L Kellogg Sr says:

Meanwhile, a Winfield KS newspaper editorial today asks: Brownback a one-term governor?

A statewide poll suggests Sam Brownback may be a one-term governor. A Survey USA poll taken last week for Wichita’s KWCH-TV Channel 12 put Democrat Paul Davis ahead of Brownback, 43 to 39 percent.

  2. Danedri you’re always welcome to battle with our Dem friends on the CFG. :)

  3. jeffabarber says:

“conservatives, by nature, seek not to offend”? Limbaugh, Coulter, Mike Savage, Beck, Hannity? They do nothing BUT offend. Conservatives are “strangely silent” because the Repub party has been hi-jacked by the Tea Party, Crazy-train. Oh, yes, that same Ted Cruz. Conservatives of today are silent because they’re still in shock that their party is gone. If you’re in favor for any kind of gun-control, planned parenthood, man-made climate change, stop over-funding the Military, etc. then you’re a Leee-bral devil. Even the Republican-God that is Regan, is too far left of the tea-party. Conservatives of today are silent because they’re their main vision that is the tea-party is Looney Toon’s crazy

Conservative: a person who is averse to change and holds to traditional values and attitudes.
Liberals: Favoring proposals for reform, open to new ideas for progress, and tolerant of the ideas and behavior of others.
Progressive: Promoting or favoring progress toward better conditions or new policies, ideas, or methods.

  4. Conservatives are ‘strangely quiet’ because for every Limbaugh or whoever, there are ten lamestream media wonks who, instead of being talkshow hosts, are ‘Journolists’ (look it up) plotting ways of silencing dissent or anything that makes a liberal look bad. Who remembers Benghazi, or the NSA, or the IRS? Who remembers Obamacare and the lies told to the American public to get it passed? Who remembers Fast and Furious? Or the ill-fated ‘springtime’ in the Middle East that now has radicals running countries who were, at least, friendly to us?

Apparently someone here in the comments can’t remember Candy Crowley jumping in to — what was the word? — ‘silence’ Mitt Romney when she lied about Obama lying about terrorism in Benghazi.

It’s pretty telling that, even though conservatives have been screaming about all of these travesties, and more, the only thing we hear from the media and liberals (oops, same thing, neh?) are hate-filled rants about talk show hosts. Strange that they’re too hypocritical to point out their own talk show jerks. You talk about ‘crazy’, but ignore nutjobs Rachel Maddow or Keith Olbermann or Piers Morgan? You talk about a party being hijacked, when it’s the Democrats who see comedians as their policy experts. Jon Stewart is supposedly a political genius and Bill Maher paid a million dollars to the Obama campaign, even though he (Maher) refers to women using the ugly c*** word.

Conservatives, by nature, seek not to offend. It’s funny, by contrast, that the only conservatives liberals truly fear and hate are the ones who behave just like liberals.

    This is a joke, right?
“conservatives, by nature, seek not to offend.”

  6. Even asking that question show how ironic it is

  7. Don’t even get me started on EITHER party, BOTH of them should be brought up on charges of TREASON. LIBERALS always think they know what’s best for everyone, yea look at Detroit, they did a FINE job there. for the most part ANY PERSON that has been in DC(the 535+1) more than one term and yes I include Obama should be ASHAMED of them selves.
