U.S. 56 Highway is closed near Four Corners Road in Edgerton after a school bus accident this afternoon.

Johnson County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to an accident involving three vehicles and a school bus at approximately 4 p.m. on May 15.

According to Tom Erickson, Public Information Officer for the sheriff’s office, the bus was stopped in the 35500 block of 56 Highway.

“Then there was a chain reaction with the three cars rear ending one into the other into the other,” Erickson said.

The drivers of the three vehicles received minor injuries, but the bus driver and the approximate 40 passengers were unharmed. The bus was traveling a local route, likely taking USD 231 students home after school.

Officers closed the road shortly after the accident while the damaged vehicles are being removed from the scene. Erickson said he anticipates the road will re-open by 5:30 p.m.
